SYNOPSIS:
At
a remote desert truck stop, the fate of the world will be
decided. Evil's armies are amassing. Armed and united by the
Archangel Michael, a group of strangers become unwitting soldiers
on the frontlines of the Apocalypse. Their mission: protect
a waitress and her sacred unborn child from the relentless,
bloody siege of the demonic legion.
MOVIE
REVIEW:
Legion seems like a supernatural movie with
entertainment potential to be the next Constantine. With it's
set up of fallen angel out to save one unborn baby from the
other angels and a group of people happened to be stuck in
between the fight, at a diner called Paradise Falls, situated
in the middle of nowhere. While it promised and delivered
a supernatural duke fest between mortals and the celestial
beings, Legion does not exactly attained that by going the
intellectual way.
In short, Legion is literally a dumb shoot'em
up flick with Zombies (ie People being possessed by Angels)
and a bunch of disposable characters built with cardboard
personality and issues.
Let's
start with the main chunk of the story. The fate of most people
stuck in the dinner had very little essential ramification
to the story and yet the movie blabber on by 'building' their
characters up, showing their woes, secrets that they kept
and conflict with each other. Perhaps the writer wanted to
show us that the troubles that trouble mortal men face are
insignificant when compared to celestial events but for a
straightforward entertainment, it just felt like a waste of
time and essentially pointless.
Then
the main event was a joke to start with. It all central around
one angel Michael who thought that God was wrong with his
decision and go against him for God's own good. There are
many contradiction about God's act in the bible but in Legion,
instead of musing about such contradiction, it just dumb the
'all knowing' God a notch down.
Talking
about making it stupid, the God in Legion would send his angels
to possess weak minded people so that they could become zombies
to surround those folks who happened to be in the same diner
as a special unborn baby and these 'zombies' also happened
to be vulnerable to bullets. The writers are definitely not
thinking in boarder sense. Where are the omnipotent power
and magic? Aren't there better ways to get the unborn baby
like sending a flood?
And
it also make one wonder, where is Lucifer when God and his
Angels were heralding mankind to one apocalyptic finale. Nope,
the writers didn't think too much on that part. They are probably
thinking how to make the special effect more impressive (which
wasn't impressive at all) and how to better frame a character
shooting bullets at 'zombies'.
The premise of Legion had potential but let
down by it's pathetic execution.
SPECIAL FEATURES :
Creating the Apocalypse - Taking
a look at the stuff done with the Physical Effects. It focus
on special effects for the Ice Cream Man, the Grannie from
hell, how Paul Bettany was doing most of his action scenes
and etc. The notable moment of this segment would be Doug
Jones explaining and showing us how he suit up for the Ice
Cream Man.
Humanity's
Last Line of Defense - This
segment discuss about the Cast and Characters. Besides the
obligatory admiration comments for each other, the personals
involved talked about how they got involved in this project
and explained their characters' motivation a tab more than
what was shown during the movie.
From
Pixels to Picture - While
the first segment look at what kind of physical effects were
used to create the make believe in Legion, this segment look
at the visual effects. It looked at how Doug Jones's physical
effects for the Ice Cream Man was clean up for the finale
product.
AUDIO/VISUAL:
This
apocalyptic showdown at a remote diner is filled with loud
special effects and visual effects. There are also plenty
of dark environments that the characters are situated in.
This dvd did an adequate representation of those elements
on a normal tv and computer screen.
